Wellness & Preventative Care
Wellness visits help your furry friends thrive year after year. Our wellness services focus on prevention, early detection, and personalized care plans to support your pet's long-term health.
Our wellness services include:
Nutrition
Nutrition plays a vital role in your pet's overall health and well-being, influencing everything from their energy levels and coat condition to their immune system and longevity. Providing your pet with a balanced diet tailored to their specific needs can help prevent health issues like obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and joint problems.
Proper nutrition is important for all stages of life. It supports healthy growth in puppies and kittens, and helps maintain optimal health in adult and senior pets.
We offer guidance on portion control, feeding schedules, and special diets for pets with specific health conditions, such as food allergies or chronic diseases. By working with you to create a tailored nutrition plan, we aim to enhance your pet's quality of life and promote long-term health.

Parasite Prevention and Deworming
Deworming and parasite prevention are essential components of maintaining your pet's health and well-being. Parasites such as worms, fleas, ticks, and mites can cause significant health problems in pets, ranging from mild discomfort to severe illness.
Regular deworming helps eliminate internal parasites like roundworms, hookworms, and tapeworms, which can lead to digestive issues, malnutrition, and anemia. Parasite prevention also includes protecting your pet from external parasites, like ticks, fleas, and lice, which can cause skin irritation, allergic reactions, and transmit diseases.
Preventative care is also important as some parasites can be transmitted from pets to humans, posing a risk to the entire family. Regular deworming and parasite control can help minimize this risk, ensuring a safe and healthy environment for both your pet and your family. Additionally, managing parasites early can prevent costly treatments and complications down the line.
Macleod Trail Animal Hospital offers a wide variety of deworming and parasite prevention solutions tailored to your pet's specific needs. We provide personalized parasite control plans based on your pet's lifestyle and individual risk factors, to ensure your pet remains healthy and happy.

Our veterinarians will work with you to determine the best schedule for deworming and parasite prevention to keep your pet and your family protected.
Puppy and Kitten Care
Welcoming a new puppy or kitten into your home is an exciting experience filled with joy, though it can also be overwhelming at times. It is also a crucial period for setting the foundation for a lifetime of health and happiness. Our mission is to support you at every stage of your new pet's life - from their very first vet visit through to their golden years. Proper care during the early stages of your pet's life can prevent many health issues and ensure they grow into strong, well-adjusted adults.
Our puppy and kitten care services include thorough health examinations; vaccinations to protect your new family member from potentially life-threatening illnesses; deworming to safeguard against internal and external parasites; nutrition recommendations for the unique needs of growing puppies and kittens; spaying and neutering recommendations; and socialization and behavioural advice to help them adjust as they grow.

Senior Pet Care
As pets age, they require additional care to maintain their health and quality of life. Senior pets often face a range of health issues, such as arthritis, diabetes, kidney disease, and cognitive decline.
Regular veterinary visits are crucial in detecting and managing these age-related conditions early, ensuring that your pet remains comfortable and happy during their golden years. At Macleod Trail Animal Hospital, we offer comprehensive senior care services tailored to the unique needs of older pets.
Our senior care services include thorough physical examinations; blood work to assess your pet's organ function and catch any issues before they become more serious; nutrition advice tailored to your aging pet's individual needs; pain management and mobility support to help your pet remain active and comfortable; dental care solutions; and advice to manage behavioural changes that are common in senior pets.

Our compassionate team is dedicated to providing the best possible care for your senior pet, ensuring they enjoy their later years with the dignity and love they deserve. Let us partner with you in providing exceptional care for your beloved senior pet.
Wellness Appointments
As our pets cannot speak and tend to hide their illnesses, it can be difficult to determine if there is a health problem without a professional opinion. That’s why Macleod Trail Animal Hospital recommends that all pets have a wellness exam at least once a year as an important part of their preventive care.
A wellness examination consists of a comprehensive nose-to-tail assessment to determine if there are any areas of concern, such as lumps, a heart murmur, or dental disease. We also discuss your pet’s diet, behavior, and other aspects of their health, and we encourage you to let us know about any changes you’ve noticed in their health or behavior.
After the exam is complete, we use our findings to determine if any form of treatment or testing is warranted. We can also discuss our recommendations for preventive medicine, including internal and external parasite control, nutrition, and vaccinations to keep your furry family member healthy.

Vaccinations
Another important component of your pet’s health are routine vaccinations, which can serve as a protective measure against potentially fatal and contagious diseases. The best way to treat illness is to prevent it, so by staying up-to-date on your pets’ wellness visits and vaccinations, we can help them live their lives to the fullest.
Why Does My Pet Need Vaccinations?
This is a common question from many pet parents. Vaccinations are given to pets to prevent many kinds of contagious diseases. Some of the vaccines prevent life-threatening illnesses in pets for which there is no cure.
Vaccines work by giving your pet a small amount or part of the virus that stimulates their immune system so that when they encounter the real virus, their immune system is prepared to fight off the disease. Vaccines are typically given a series in puppies and kittens and then boosters as needed throughout life.
At Macleod Trail Animal Hospital, we recommend vaccines for your pets based on their lifestyle. We believe that all pets do not need all vaccines every year. Some vaccines are required for travel or boarding while others are more based on lifestyle and other risks.

If it’s time for a checkup or you have any concerns, book an appointment so one of our veterinarians can help keep your pet feeling their best.
